The breakfast will give business leaders, community stakeholders, and residents a closer look at the strategy behind West Monroe’s efforts to attract new retail, restaurant, and commercial investment while continuing to strengthen the community’s existing business environment.

Featured speaker Elliott Cook, Director of Real Estate for Retail Strategies, will discuss how market data, consumer trends, available real estate, community assets and relationships with retailers, brokers and developers all influence successful business recruitment.

“Economic development is about much more than simply filling a storefront. It is about intentionally creating the kind of community where businesses see opportunity, residents have more choices, and people want to live, work and invest,” said Kristopher Kelley, CEO of the West Monroe–West Ouachita Chamber of Commerce. “This breakfast gives our community an opportunity to better understand the work happening behind the scenes and how each new investment can become part of a much larger strategy for West Monroe’s future.”

As humans prepare for deep-space missions, a major obstacle must be addressed: What will they eat?
Louisiana Tech University biology professor Dr. Joshua Vandenbrink and his colleagues are currently researching that issue for NASA, focusing on mushroom cultivation. He will discuss his research on Tuesday, September 22, at 5:30 p.m. in the Union Museum of History and Art, 211 N. Main Street, Farmerville, LA. His presentation, "Growing Food in Space: Current Research and Future Perspectives," is a feature of the museum’s NASA exhibit on display from August 13 to Sept. 26.
Dr. Vandenbrink, associate professor in Louisiana Tech University’s School of Biological Sciences, received the NASA Research Initiation Award to study how edible mushrooms can be cultivated in space as part of sustainable life support systems for long-duration space missions.

Every Tuesday evening, the Jazz Navigators (Adam Ryland, Dan Sumner, Eric Siereveld, Pearson Cross) play jazz from 6-8 pm at the Flying Tiger. Joining the Navigators each week will be special guests. The last Tuesday of the each month is the "Jazz Jam," where jazz students and practitioners join the band on selected tunes.

This annual breakfast is an important opportunity to bring together our schools, business partners, nonprofits, churches, and community leaders as we kick off another year of meaningful school partnerships. The Adopt A School program helps connect local schools with committed community adopters who can support student success, encourage educators, and strengthen the connection between classrooms and the broader community.

Whether you are a returning adopter, a school representative, or an organization interested in learning how to get involved, this event will help us make strong matches and set the stage for a successful year.

Breakfast is free, but an RSVP is requested so we can plan appropriately for food, seating, and materials.

This meeting will focus on prostate and colorectal cancer—two serious health issues affecting individuals and families throughout our community. We will discuss the barriers that prevent people from being screened and explore how community leaders and organizations can work together to encourage early detection and connect residents with lifesaving screening opportunities.
