Sentimental Journey
FRIDAY 7 TO 9 P.M.

Sentimental Journey brings back the music America listened to before rock ’n’ roll ruled the airwaves. The show brings back the crooners, the instrumentalists, and stylings of the years from the 1940s through the early 1960s.

Today on the radio, you’re hard-pressed to find any indication that the genius of Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams, Rosemary Clooney and Johnny Mathis ever happened. Cool Jazz was, well, cool. Strings had their heyday – remember Living Strings and Montavani?

Mark Henderson, known to KEDM audiences as the long-time host of Best of Broadway and Encore, brings back the memories he has of the time growing up, being influenced by the music of his parents, when times were simpler and melodies could be hummed.

Each week, Sentimental Journey starts off with jazz from the years following the big band era. The cool offerings of Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Dave Brubeck among others. Some traditional jazz from the era also will be heard.

The second segment each week brings the vocalists to the forefront, the voices varied, but sure to stir a memory.

The third segment will most often be laid back with the orchestras and instrumentalists that proved words weren’t essential to pleasurable listening.

The second hour of Sentimental Journey kicks off with the spotlight segment – a stretch of up to 20 minutes featuring a great artist of the era – among them Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, and Judy Garland.

Mark will follow that with a segment he refers to as his “surprise” spot. Something new and surprising every week from the vaults of the time, from movie music, to folk, to the charming offerings of Leroy Anderson. Expect anything and everything here.

And every Sentimental Journey show concludes with a segment of Big Bands, leading into Swinging Down the Lane.
