Monroe Mayor Friday Ellis has appointed Charles A. Butcher as the Director of the Monroe Regional Airport.

Butcher has a career in aviation that spans two decades; he most recently served as the Director of Security Access and Ground Transportation Services at the Northwest Arkansas National Airport. There, he was involved with the airport’s yearly part 139 and TSA part 1542 inspections.

A small private plane, believed to occupied by only the pilot, had an emergency landing just before 3 p.m. Thursday at the Monroe Regional Airport.  According to Ron Phillips Airport Director the plane was forced to do a “belly” landing when its landing gear failed to work properly.  There are no reported injuries.

Monroe Regional Airport Director Ron Phillips says, “The emergency repairs have been completed and our main runway is now open.  We thank local air travelers for their patience and apologize for the inconvenience.  Air travel can now return to normal at the Monroe Regional Airport.”

A Monroe Regional Airport runway has been closed. The main MLU runway has a washout along the edge which must be repaired.

Airlines providing service to the airport will use the secondary runway. The secondary runway is shorter, causing many flights to be cancelled or rescheduled.

Passengers have been diverted to Shreveport and Alexandria.

Airport officials have announced that they hope to have the washout repaired by Thursday.

Monroe Regional Airport Director Ron Phillips says, “It appears that the federal government shutdown is being felt in Monroe.  This morning, three (3) flights at the Monroe Regional Airport were cancelled due to the fact that TSA agents did not report to work today to man their security checkpoints.  Approximately 150-200 passengers were affected so far this morning.  As a result, the United Airlines (7:15 am) flight was changed to 8:50 am, the Delta (7:00 am) flight departed at 8:18 am, and American Airlines (5:56 am) flight was cancelled.  At this time, all later flights appear to be on s

Seven airline flights to or from Houston via the Monroe Regional Airport have been cancelled.  Houston Bush Intercontinental Airport  and Houston Hobby Airport both are having flooding issues on their runways. The pooling of water on or over the runways in Houston is making it impossible for planes to takeoff or land.

Both airports are closed until further notice.  This situation may continue for many days.

Passengers are urged to check with airlines for the latest information.
