ULM Museum of Natural History and Bayou Discovery Summer Camps to host STEAM camps

ULM Museum of Natural History and Bayou Discovery Summer Camps will hold two STEAM camps this summer.

STEAM is an acronym that represents science, technology, engineering, arts, and math.

The first STEAM camp is titled "Marvels of the Human Body," and is for students entering the 4th and 5th grades. The camp will be June 9 to June 13, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The cost for this camp will be $120 per camper and is limited to only 24 participants.

In partnership with ULM VCOM, activities for the camp include extracting DNA, looking at fingerprints, and building a stethoscope. Each student will even get a special code name.

Dr. Kim Tolson, the camp co-director, talks about what students can look forward to at the camp. "It's really engaging," she voices. "They get a lot of hands-on experience."

At the end of the month, from June 23 to June 26, Bayou Discovery Summer Camps will hold a STEAM camp titled "Crushing It." This camp will be for students entering the 2nd and 3rd grades.

The cost per camper is $100 and is limited to only 20 participants. Times for this camp will also be from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Chemical reactions, making slime, and stations that visit every planet are just a few components of the camp.

Dr. Allison Wiedemeier with Bayou Discovery Camps, talks about how this camp is different than "Marvels of the Human Body."

"This one is not human body associated," she says. "It's really just all about a little bit of interesting science."

The location for both camps will be at the ULM Museum of Natural History, on the 1st floor of Hanna Hall.

More information about the camps and how to register can be found at https://www.ulm.edu/summercamps/science.html, or by emailing steam@ulm.edu.
