A weekend protest was held at the Richwood ICE Detention Center on Saturday to raise awareness of the migrants held in the prison.

Many of these detained immigrants are seeking asylum in the United States.

According to an announcment by organizers at the Northminster Church in Monroe, the protest is in response to the death of 43 year old Royland Hernández-Diáz, of Cuba, who died while detained at Richwood. His death is believed to be a suicide. 

Richwood Detention Center has not released a statement regarding the protest.

Congressman Ralph Abraham has cosponsored a bill to strip federal funding from sanctuary cities, which do not comply with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer requests.

SHREVEPORT, La.  Illegal alien and felon Shandy Salgado-Almendaris, 39, of Mexico, pleaded guilty today before Chief Judge S. Maurice Hicks Jr. to one count of re-entry of a removed alien and one count of felon in possession of a firearm, U.S. Attorney David C. Joseph announced.  

The chief of a Louisiana fire department was investigating a traffic accident when he was struck and killed by a car on an icy highway.

State police say in a news release that winter weather was a factor in the Wednesday morning accident that killed 48-year-old Russell Achord.

Louisiana Declares State of Emergency

Today, Gov. John Bel Edwards issued an Emergency Declaration due to the freezing precipitation and low temperatures throughout Louisiana. The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOSHEP), Dept. of Transportation and Development (DOTD) and other state agencies have been activated in response to this emergency.

A Hard Freeze Warning is in effect for much of the KEDM listening area for Wednesday night.

Freezing temperatures will continue across much of the region today, then plummeting shortly after sunset tonight back into the teens and possibly upper single digits in some outlying and more rural areas. * TIMING...9 PM tonight through 9 AM Thursday. * IMPACT...Take precautions to cover exposed pipes and bring pets indoors as well as protect any sensitive outdoor plants.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service are predicting winter weather will move into the region Monday night and into Tuesday morning. An Arctic cold front will bring extreme cold after sunset on Monday. Rain will transition to sleet and snow. 1/2 to 2" of snow are possible with 2-3" in northwest Louisiana and southwest Arkansas. 

Travel could become difficult because of slushy roadways and bridges.  Temps won't get back above freezing until Wednesday afternoon. The system will produce temperatures low as 15 degrees.
