Legislators Hopeful For State Revenue Plans

B. Lenox

Louisiana Representatives are taking more steps to make extra money for higher education.

Representative Jim Fannin reported at Tuesday's chamber lunch that House Bill 555 has officially been passed.

The bill will allow the state to collect taxes whenever an online purchase is made on sites such as, "the amazons and the ebays."

"It won't be people's responsibility to keep up with how much they spend and remit," Fannin said.

Meanwhile, Governor Jindal's signature is still needed before it becomes law.

Speaking of laws, Representative Charles Chaney of Rayville wants to amend the law on property tax exemptions for public land and property.

The state constitution currently states that public land or property, used for public purpose, isn't required to pay taxes. That means land presently owned by other states is free from tax.

Chaney wants that flipped so that exemptions will only be allowed for property and  land owned by the state.

Chaney's proposal will be on the ballot in the Fall and will require a two thirds vote from the state.
