Chaney Seeks Ad Valorem Tax On Fall Ballot

A north Louisiana lawmaker is wanting to add a constitutional amendment item to this fall's state ballot.

Rep. Bubba Chaney (R-Rayville) is making efforts to amend the state's constitution.  It currently holds that if you own land that if you hold public land used for public purpose, you don't have to pay taxes on it.  Chaney wants to reverse that.

"The constitution early on, should have precluded that.  It should have prevented any other state from taking advantage of that.  It didn't do it," says Chaney.

If the amendment passes this fall, taxes will be placed on properties owned in other states.  The only exception is for such property that is owned by the state of Louisiana.
