There & Back Again: WWNO's Katrina Story

WWNO 89.9 FM

A lot changes in 10 years. Here atWWNO, we’ve witnessed many transformations since the summer of 2005: we’ve expanded our format, started a local news department, and even won some awards.

None of that would have been possible without the memorable efforts ofWWNO’sstaff who kept the radio station running after Hurricane Katrina and the floods that followed.

Whether it was setting up a temporary broadcast post in Atlanta, finding a way back into the city to check on the transmitter, or making sure local folks got the information they needed to begin rebuilding their lives, our staff performed above and beyond. We’ve compiled some recollections from that time to share with you. Click here to hear WWNO's Katrina Story.

Special thanks toWWNOanchors Diane Mack, JackHopke, and FarrarHudkins; producer FredKasten; production manager JenniLawson; chief engineer Robert Carroll; and operations manager Ron Curtis for sharing their stories.

Thomas Walsh is an independent radio producer for WWNO. Each week he works to produce new editions of Louisiana Eats and All Things New Orleans, as well as Notes From New Orleans, The Farmer's Market Minute, and The Green Minute. Outside WWNO, Thomas is a volunteer disc jockey for WTUL, where he hosts a weekly live four-hour program broadcasting twentieth century classical music. Thomas has four years experience in audio engineering, and a BA from Trinity University in San Antonio where he double majored in communications and philosophy. Someday he will give away his entire collection of Grateful Dead concerts, which has swelled to unnecessary proportions in recent years.
