The thought of being sent away can be hard to manage as people age, but change is not always bad. Marta West, director of operations at Maison Healthcare has advice for a better transition to a new home.

Interview Highlights:

On making the decision of moving into a nursing home

The decision differs from person to person depending on their status, but once someone becomes diagnosed with multiple chronic conditions, they should highly consider having at least some short-term nursing care with long-term being highly recommended.

How to prepare emotionally

With so many changes and emotional stress going on in a person's life during this time, it is best to look at the transition in a more positive manner. Try to look at it as if you are moving into a college dorm for the first time where you are able to make new friends, experience new things, or even take on a new hobby that you never had time for.

How to prepare for downsizing

You must prepare yourself financially and downsizing. Take your most prized possessions and the things that make you feel warm and at home so that it does not cater to those ill emotions that may be going through your mind. Also, be sure to have your financial affairs in order to have a stable foundation for your healthcare and other personal needs.
