Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser and the Louisiana State Museum are set to host an event commemorating the Battle of Baton Rouge and the dedication of Louisiana’s first Chaters for Freedom monument on Saturday, September 19, 2026.

The morning will begin at 9 a.m. with the Louisiana Society of the Sons of the Revolution's commemoration of the Battle of Baton Rouge, honoring the pivotal Revolutionary War battle fought on September 21, 1779, in which Spanish Governor Bernardo de Gálvez and his multinational forces captured the British-held fort at Baton Rouge. The annual ceremony pays tribute to those who fought for liberty and recognizes Louisiana's important role in the American Revolution.

Immediately following the commemoration will be the dedication of Louisiana's first Charters of Freedom Monument on the grounds of Capitol Park Museum. Baton Rouge will become the first in Louisiana to receive the monument which features full-size replicas of the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Civil Rights Amendments in a display modeled after the National Archives in Washington, D.C.
