Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards has released data showing that the number of abortions in Louisiana has fallen to a 10-year low. Since 2014, the number of abortions conducted in Louisiana has fallen by 20 percent.

In 2018, 8,048 abortions were conducted in the state, the lowest since 2008. It represents a 20 percent drop from 2014, when 10,211 abortions were performed in Louisiana.

The “Adoption Option” bill that would require abortion clinics to provide information about the adoption process to women seeking abortions is nearing final passage. The legislation would also mandate the creation of a state website with information about adoption. Louisiana Right to Life Executive Director Ben Clapper says he hopes it will result in fewer abortions.

Clapper says, "We want women to encourage giving their children the gift of life and also choosing adoption which not only helps the babies, but it helps the mothers as well."

Today, First Lady Donna Edwards is launching a new initiative to connect foster parents with the support systems they need in their communities. This statewide campaign will link government, faith groups, nonprofit organizations, businesses and community members to create a united network of support for Louisiana’s foster care system.
