Seniors in Monroe express concern about issues such as transportation, safety and hunger, according to Monroe City Councilman Michael Echols.

“Simple strategies can work to improve our community,” said Echols.

Crosswalks and sidewalks give seniors the ability to live, work and play safely in a small community, according to Echols.

“In District 1, I have several developments that have large populations of seniors that walk,” said Echols. “Crosswalks would give us a protected way for folks can get across the streets.”

Echols added that transportation is also a challenge that seniors face.

According to Echols, Monroe has a strong network for feeding seniors, but there is room for improvement.

“Now we have a very robust senior network system between our senior centers, food bank and other organizations that are working to provide access to food,” said Echols.

Echols explained the third issue seniors are concerned about is crime.

“One of them, and this is kind of top of mine along with all the city of Monroe, but it’s the crime,” said Echols. “There’s a fear throughout our senior community about the crime and what’s been happening over the last several years and the escalation there.”

Echols explained strategies such as better lighting throughout the community and having digital security districts with cameras in highly populated areas to track crime.
