Student-Led Effort Wants Amendment to Protect Higher Ed

S. Hersted

A group of Louisiana State University students are urging legislators to approve a constitutional amendment protecting higher education in the upcoming session.

Mass Communications student David Scotton says the push is for an amendment to be proposed.  "We want cuts to higher education to be the only solution," he said.  The Jindal administration is considering cuts of up to $400 million to public colleges in the wake of a $1.6 billion shortfall for next fiscal year.

Scotton says the campaign has already received 1,000 signatures from students who support a call for an amendment. "It's a show that students care and students matter," said Scotton.  He plans to lobby lawmakers in coming weeks to let them know an amendment can help from further weakening colleges across the state.
