KEDM Roots Revival Innovates on History

Old meets new when the KEDM Roots Revival takes the stage at Live Oaks Bar & Ballroom on Thursday, August 10th at 7 p.m.

We'll take historic recordings and give them a new twist with the talents of musicians right here in northeast Louisiana.

Folklorist Alan Lomax spent his career documenting folk music traditions from around the world. In the South, he visited farms, prisons, and rural communities; recording work songs, reels, ballads, and blues in the 1930's and 1940's. Lomax and his father, John Lomax, changed the popular perception of folk music from archival nostalgia to a living expression of the common man and contemporary culture.

KEDM Roots Revival features local musicians as they give vintage Lomax recordings a new life -- premiering an original music mix in what's sure to be a lively evening. You'll hear fresh arrangements from Brian Sivils & Kirby Rambin, Jig the Alien, Astro Motel, Mason Howard and more.

Special guest Dr. Barry Ancelet serves as a guide on this cultural journey. Ancelet has spent his life working to honor Cajun and Creole culture. He has degrees in French, folklore, anthropology and linguistics, and retired from the University of Louisiana Lafayette. He helped establish the Lafayette Festivals Acadiens et Créoles, the annual three-day festival celebrating the music, crafts, and food of south Louisiana.

Come hear what happens when northeast Louisiana creativity meets the heritage of Americana at the KEDM Roots Revival!

A $5 cover charge will be collected at Live Oaks Bar & Ballroom on Thursday, August 10th.

KEDM appreciates the following sponsors: Live Oaks Bar & Ballroom, Matt's Music, The Good Earth Juice and Salad Bar, Hamilton House Inn, BayouLife Magazine, Doe's Eat Place, Washington Wine & Spirits, Dr. Terry Tugwell and Ralph Webb.
