The National Park Service is preparing for a centennial celebration in 2016.

NPS Director Jonathan Jarvis says next year showcases the parks across the country.  "There will be a series of events in all 408 of the national parks.  And we have a goal about connecting and creating the next generation of park advocates and supporters," he said.

Another initiative hopes to reach young people in discovering the National Park system.  Every Kid In A Park is aimed at fourth graders, who typically begin learning about history in their schoolwork.

Jarvis says the program keeps an educational element as young people learn more about parks and can earn a pass from the National Park Service.  "They can do it online, and can download a voucher as they work with their teacher at school," he said.

Park visitors are also encouraged to participate in sharing stories about their experience as they visit various parks during the centennial celebration.
