The 2026 severe weather season was well below normal in terms of tornadoes in Northern and Central Louisiana. Across the entire NWS Shreveport County Warning Area, only nine tornadoes have been confirmed so far this year. However, it is important for to remain prepared for the next time we have a risk of severe weather.
Based on history and climatology, the frequency of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes increases dramatically in October and continues through June. The peak months for tornadoes in our area are March through May. With the 2026-2027 severe weather season fast approaching, the National Weather Service, in cooperation with the Louisiana Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, has designated the week of October 12th as Louisiana Severe Weather Awareness Week. This is a safety campaign designed to help residents in the State of Louisiana prepare for the upcoming storm season. Severe weather does not know boundaries. Even if you don't live or work in Louisiana, now is a good time to make sure that you are prepared for severe weather.
For Louisiana Severe Weather Awareness Week 2026, the following safety topics will be highlighted.
Monday, October 12th: Make a Kit/Make a Plan and Mobile Home Safety
Getting ready for severe weather before it happens. Making sure you know what to do before storms threaten the area, and reviewing information on prompting action to keep mobile home residents safe.
Tuesday, October 13th: Severe Thunderstorms
Focusing on the dangers of large hail and damaging winds gusts.
Wednesday, October 14th: Tornadoes
Highlighting safety tips to help people identify safe shelters, and develop a family emergency action plan before storms arrive.
Thursday, October 15th: Flash Flooding
Highlighting the dangers of flash flooding along with safety tips.
Friday, October 16th: Watches, Warnings, and Reception
Providing information on what it means to be under a Severe Thunderstorm or Tornado Watch or Warning, and what actions are recommended when watches are issued. Wireless Emergency Alerts and NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards are great ways to ensure life-saving warnings are received. Always have more than one way to receive weather information,
