Artwork for the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area 20th Anniversary Postcard was unveiled today during a celebration at Sugar Fest in West Baton Rouge Parish.

Designed by celebrated Lafayette artist Denise Gallagher, the colorful artwork captures the spirit of the Atchafalaya Basin, featuring its towering cypress knees, native wildlife, and the deep-rooted cultural heritage of the people who call the region home.

“When people visit Louisiana, they want to experience something real. There is nothing more authentic than the Atchafalaya Basin. For twenty years, this national designation has helped us share the magic of our swamps, our music, and our incredible food with travelers from all over the world,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser.

“This anniversary isn't just about protecting a beautiful landscape; it’s about celebrating the resilient people who keep our unique culture alive. The Atchafalaya Basin is the absolute beating heart of what makes us Louisiana, and it's a place that will truly Feed Your Soul.”

The 20th anniversary celebration was part of Sugar Fest, held annually in West Baton Rouge Parish to highlight the region’s sugarcane heritage, culture, food, and community.

The unveiling provided an opportunity to recognize the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area’s two decades of work connecting visitors with the region’s distinctive natural, cultural, and historic resources. The Atchafalaya National Heritage Area stretches across 15 parishes in south-central Louisiana and tells the story of the people, places, and traditions connected to the Atchafalaya Basin.

“Twenty years ago, the unique culture and natural beauty of the Atchafalaya region made the case for recognition as a place with a nationally significant story,” said Executive Director Caroline Cassagne. “I’m proud to celebrate all of the partners who have supported the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area along the way and the many accomplishments we have achieved while also looking toward what the future holds.”

The commemorative postcards and pins will soon be available at tourism information centers located in the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area. Louisiana residents and visitors are encouraged to follow @atchafalayanha on social media for updates on where the anniversary items will be available.
