Today, Governor Jeff Landry announced a major economic development initiative involving SpaceX. SpaceX announced it will build a $100 billion launch facility called Starbase Louisiana near Pecan Island.
SpaceX is an aerospace company that produces commercial spacecraft. It is known for bringing down development costs with reusable rocket parts. SpaceX aims to establish a sustained presence on the Moon and colonize Mars.
StarBase Louisiana will be built in Vermilion Parish about 40 miles south of Abbeville. The spaceport is designed to support thousands of launches annually and unlock spaceflight on an unprecedented scale. This spaceport would be roughly 125,000 acres of land near the coastal site on the Gulf of Mexico. These operations would accommodate heavy barges carrying rockets.
SpaceX executives have emphasized a need for additional launch sites to achieve the plan of launching up to 100,000 Starlink mobile and broadband satellites and up to 1 million orbital data center satellites.

This project is expected to provide 3,000 jobs and economic growth in the area over the next decade. Louisiana Economic Development estimates the project will generate more than 8,100 indirect new jobs for more than 11,100 new job opportunities in Acadiana.

Environmentalist have expressed their concerns about loss of habitat and wildlife; however, the company plans to partner with local conservation organizations and experts to identify opportunities to protect and avoid potential impacts to the area.
Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with the first launch targeted to be as soon as 2029
