Starting July 2027, voters without a photo ID will no longer be able to simply sign an affidavit to verify their identity at polling stations. Instead, they will need to present specific documentation to cast their ballot.
Acceptable forms of identification will include a birth certificate, Social Security card, or certificate of citizenship, along with a voter registration notice, recent utility bill, bank statement, or pay stub.
Secretary of State Nancy Landry argues that the changes are aimed at enhancing voter integrity. However, critics have raised concerns, warning that the new requirements could lead to voter suppression by creating additional hurdles for marginalized groups, including low-income individuals and the elderly.
