The Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) has released draft revisions to the state’s K–12 physical education student standards for public review. Louisiana is reviewing its standards to help strengthen the role of physical fitness in promoting health and student success. The public is encouraged to view the proposed revisions and submit comments until April 15th at 4:00 p.m.
“Physical education should help foster a lifelong commitment to movement, play, and healthy activities," said Louisiana State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley. “We appreciate the thoughtful work of the review committee and invite the public to share feedback as we move forward.”
The review of previous standards began in the fall of 2025 as part of the state's regular seven-year review cycle required under BESE policy. Standards before the new revision were established in 2017.
The committee members on this decision range from perspectives including teachers, health professionals, higher education faculty, and other education stakeholders from across Louisiana.
The Louisiana Department of Education will collect feedback and present it to the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. If approved, then the updated standards will be implemented statewide beginning in the 2027-2028 school year.
