A Baton Rouge couple has been arrested following an investigation into an attempted insurance scam. After receiving a report from an insurance carrier on Oct. 7, 2025, alleging Rhashiedi Porter and Sarai Stansberry filed a false insurance claim, the Louisiana Department of Insurance (LDI) Office of Insurance Fraud alerted the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office and Louisiana State Police.
Porter and Stansberry are both charged with insurance fraud, perjury, false swearing and filing false public records. Porter and Stansberry allegedly provided sworn testimony claiming they were seated inside their vehicle when it was struck by another vehicle in a New Orleans parking lot. The couple further claimed they were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash and had sustained injuries requiring more than five months of medical treatment.
However, security video revealed neither Porter nor Stansberry was inside the vehicle during the accident. Investigators later confirmed the couple had intentionally submitted a false claim to defraud the insurance company of approximately $30,000. Based on the evidence obtained during the investigation, Porter and Stansberry were arrested in New Orleans on February 23.
“Louisiana drivers are already paying some of the highest auto insurance rates in the nation, and scams like this increase premiums for every hardworking citizen and business in our state,” said Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple. “This kind of criminal activity will not be tolerated in Louisiana. The LDI and our law enforcement partners will continue aggressively pursuing those who commit these types of insurance crimes.”
