Louisiana Blue volunteers pack more than half a million meals to restock food banks statewide

BATON ROUGE, La. – Since January, more than 2,000 volunteers from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana (Louisiana Blue), Entergy Louisiana, Healthy Blue Louisiana and other community partners have packed more than half a million red beans and rice meals to help restock food banks across the state.

The meals, made with Louisiana-grown rice donated by Cajun Country Rice, were assembled during 10 regional volunteer events supporting the second annual Million Meals for MLK campaign led by Volunteer Louisiana and Feeding Louisiana. The food will be distributed through local food banks and hunger relief organizations serving families in need.

Organizers say the effort comes at a critical time, as food banks work to replenish supplies following the holiday season and recent severe winter weather in parts of the state. Statewide campaign results are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
