The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has officially announced the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico High and Gulf of Mexico Low offshore airspace areas to Gulf of America High and Gulf of America Low. This decision aligns with Executive Order 14172, titled "Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness," which was signed into effect on January 20, 2025.
Despite the name change, all operational aspects of the airspace remain unchanged. Boundaries, altitudes, and operating requirements are unaffected, ensuring no disruption to air traffic procedures or navigation for flights traversing the Louisiana coastline. The designated airspace includes areas extending upward from 1,200 feet MSL and from FL 280 to FL 600, bounded by a line 12 miles offshore and parallel to the Louisiana shoreline.
The FAA has classified this adjustment as an administrative update that does not necessitate public notice or comment, citing its non-substantive nature and lack of significant economic impact. The new names will officially take effect on August 7, 2025, as part of the FAA's ongoing efforts to maintain current and accurate airspace designations.
