A former school official in Louisiana has been charged with criminal offenses involving mail-order prescription drugs.

KTBS-TV reports that a federal bill of information charges former Bossier Parish Schools Superintendent Scott Smith with four misdemeanor counts of simple possession of a controlled substance. KTBS says the drugs involved were sleep and anxiety medications.

The 61-year-old Smith is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Shreveport on Thursday to answer the charges.

Smith's attorney, Paul Carmouche, says his client has accepted responsibility and cooperated with authorities.

Smith retired as superintendent in February.
