Uber Launches in Monroe

Uber officials and Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo have officially launched Uber in Monroe.

Mayo says the coming of Uber will bring an option of safe and flexible transportation to the people of Monroe. He and Uber officials explained that Monroe's ordinance allowing a ride-sharing service is a model for a statewide framework.

In July, the Monroe City Council unanimously approved the ordinance that made it possible for companies like Uber and Lyft to operate in Monroe. Under the ordinance, each company that expands into Monroe pays a $2,500 permit fee annually to the city.

Ride-sharing service Uber, valued at $70 billion, announced a new CEO in August, former Expedia chief Dara Khosrowshahi. Uber operates in more than six hundred cities worldwide.
