Families Explore School Choices As Application Deadline Draws Near

It's National School Choice Week — a week aimed at showcasing school options across the country. Here in New Orleans, families are exploring choices as the school application deadline draws near.Families Explore School Choices As Application Deadline Draws Near

With the deadline a month away, families can draw on several resources to learn more about schools.

The Parents' Guide to Public Schools is hot off the presses — available online and around the city at libraries, childcare centers, and schools. It lays out detailed information about each open public school. This year the guide includes new stats like class sizes and expulsion rates. On February 7, families can look beyond the guide and meet with school leaders at the Urban League Schools Expo. The event, held at the Superdome, features representatives from early childcare programs and k-12 schools.

Families have until February 27 to submit an application ranking their top eight choices. They'll receive school assignments the week of April 6.

Support for education reporting on WWNO comes from Baptist Community Ministries and Entergy Corporation.
