Northeast Louisiana Music Trail to Honor Al Puddler Harris with 27th Marker

The Northeast Louisiana Music Trail is preparing to unveil its 27th historical marker, honoring influential musician AL Puddler Harris and his remarkable contributions to American music.

Harris’s musical roots trace back to his childhood in Jigger, Louisiana, where he first played piano in his grandfather’s general store— an early hub for local musicians and a place where his grandfather sold pianos. After high school, during which he performed in a band with Fred Carter Jr., Harris enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. Upon returning home, he stepped into a pivotal role as the staff pianist for the Louisiana Hayride, succeeding Floyd Kramer and accompanying notable artists such as Johnny Horton.

Harris’s career soon expanded beyond Louisiana. He moved to Hollywood with fellow musicians Fred Carter Jr., Joe Osborne, and James Burton. While Carter later joined the group that became The Band, Harris, Osborne, and Burton formed Ricky Nelson’s backup band. During this period, Harris appeared on television and played on recording sessions for major Los Angeles–based groups throughout the 1960s.

Later, Harris relocated to Nashville, where his energetic boogie-woogie piano style made him a highly sought-after session musician. His work included performances and recordings with celebrated artists such as Loretta Lynn, Governor Jimmy Davis, and Conway Twitty. He also joined Lieutenant Governor Fox McKeithen’s Louisiana Caravan and toured with Governor Jimmy Davis.

The commemorative marker honoring Harris will be unveiled Saturday, November 22, 2025 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Jigger, Louisiana, directly in front of the old general store at 7227 HWY 128. Following the ceremony, attendees are invited to continue the celebration at a nearby farm owned by one of Harris’s nephews for a more personal, home-grown gathering.
