Local Musicians Honor John Brown Sr. with Memorial Scholarship Concert

The legacy of John Brown Sr., an accomplished musician from Gilbert, Louisiana, will be honored at the third annual John Brown Sr. Memorial Scholarship Band concert on Saturday, October 25, 2025. This will be at the Dixie Center for the Arts at 212 N Vienna St. in Ruston, Louisiana.

Brown toured with four Grammy-winning artists—Jody Miller, Donna Fargo, Dolly Parton, and Loretta Lynn—before returning home to mentor local musicians. He tragically passed away in a vehicle accident in 2023, but his passion for music lives on through this scholarship concert.

The event features a 14-15 piece band, including five members of the RustTown Horns big band, performing Yacht Rock favorites, John’s true musical passion. Featured songs include Steely Dan’s “Peg” and “Deacon Blues,” Bob Seger’s “Low Down,” and Average White Band’s “Pick Up the Pieces.” John Brown Jr., his son, will also perform.

All proceeds support music scholarships for high school seniors and donations to local middle and high school band programs. A silent auction will also be part of the evening, and organizers are seeking additional sponsors and donated items to help fund the cause.

Doors open at 5 p.m., and the show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 and available exclusively through Eventbrite.com; while tickets are not sold at the door, attendees without advance purchase will be admitted for $20.
