Diagnosing and Detecting Sleep Apnea

Courtesy

Sleep studies raise awareness of sleep apnea and other health concerns.

Sleep apnea currently affects about 18 million people. The disorder can be found in young children and the elderly.  Melissa Bynes-Brooks describes sleep apnea as an obstruction of the upper airway while one sleeps.

"Based on the data compiled during the night the physician can usually look at the recorded data and make a determination as to whether or not the patient actually has sleep apnea," Bynes-Brooks says.

Brooks' office is located on the campus of the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Visit the Brooks Home Sleep Studies website for more information.
