Art helps bring the world into focus. The Masur Museum helps with that quest with the 53rd Annual Juried Competition, on exhibit from March 9th through July 5th. The museum hosts a reception on Saturday, March 12th.

“The very first exhibit at the Masur Museum was a juried competition, and so once a year we kind of think about our own history as we put a call out to artist all over the country – asking them to submit their work to evaluated and judged by a juror,” says Curator of Collections at the Masur Ben Hickey.

Judging the competition this year is Holly Hughes, the curator of the Albright-Knox Gallery in Buffalo, New York. She has had the daunting task of narrowing down a staggering 384 artist entries from 42 states to the 72 artist displayed in the exhibit.

This year’s competition has a strong representation from Louisiana artists including photography grad students and professors from Louisiana Tech University.

“It’s going to be a very delightful exhibition to take in – very broad. There will be so many different perspectives represented from all over the country. It’s going to be great,” says Hickey.

In addition to the Juried Competition, the museum is also sponsoring a “Kids Drop-In Day” at Kiroli Park on Saturday March 12. Parents and children will have a chance to collaborate on an art project together.

Hickey also gives a free curator tour every 3rd Tuesday of the month at 5:30 p.m.
