President Donald Trump has announced that National Guard members across the nation will now receive the same pay as active‑duty troops while deployed. The change includes National Guard units stationed in New Orleans.

Approximately 120 Guard members have been in New Orleans since Mardi Gras to assist with public safety efforts. Officials say those deployments are expected to continue through August.

National Guard members are already paid for every day they serve the country. Trump’s announcement, would make them eligible for the same pay and benefits as active duty troops.

National Guard members typically receive part-time pay and certain health care benefits. Active duty benefits, however, include full-time pay, free health care, subsidized housing and retirement plans.
