Teenage Inmate Dies After Having Difficulty Breathing

A 17-year-old inmate in the Tangipahoa Parish jail has died after he complained of having difficulty breathing.

Sheriff Daniel Edwards' office, in a news release, says the teenager, identified as Charles Williams, died Tuesday after officials administered CPR.

Jail staff was alerted around 8:45 a.m. that Williams was having difficulty breathing. Staff and the on-duty nurse provided aid and administered CPR until first responders arrived and assisted to no avail. A preliminary investigation revealed no signs of trauma or foul play.

Williams has a history of asthma and recently was treated for an allergic reaction. The Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Hammond Police arrested Williams Jan. 29 on four counts of attempted second-degree murder. Further details were not released.
