Refuge hosts Hunting & Fishing Day Saturday

Safety and education are highlighted in National Hunting and Fishing Day at Tensas National Wildlife Refuge Saturday.

Refuge Assistant Manager Erin Cox says the event has grown over the years.  "We started about 15 years ago and its really become a mainstay of the community."

A full day of activities and fun contests is focused on the main purpose of the celebration.  "Our goal is really geared toward youth and educating them about the outdoors," says Cox.

In addition to safety procedures and guidelines, the event hosts displays about wildlife and forestry.  A Rocket-Net demonstration shows the audience how wood ducks are caught for tracking purposes.  Ducks are tagged with bands and released to follow migration patterns by the species.

The event begins at 9 a.m. Saturday.  Information at: www.friendsoftrnwr.org
