Baton Rouge — On Thursday February 19, Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming, M.D., spoke to members of the Zachary Rotary Club about the work and responsibilities of the Louisiana Department of Treasury.
During his remarks, Dr. Fleming discussed the primary functions of the Treasury and highlighted the accomplishments of his office, particularly its efforts to return unclaimed property to Louisiana residents.
As part of the meeting, Treasurer Fleming presented an unclaimed property check for $20,485.84 to Samuel V. Duffy of Denham Springs, the rightful owner of the funds.
Dr. Fleming encourages all Louisiana residents to visit LaCashClaim.org to search for unclaimed property. “One in six individuals in Louisiana has unclaimed property, with claims averaging $900,” said Dr. Fleming. “It is your money; we want you to claim it.”
There is currently $1.2 billion in unclaimed property being held for Louisiana citizens. Each year, businesses transfer millions of dollars in unclaimed cash, stocks, bonds, securities, and insurance proceeds to the Louisiana State Treasurer’s Office. These assets—known as unclaimed property—may include payroll checks, dormant bank accounts, royalties, utility deposits, interest payments, stock certificates, and life insurance proceeds.
