Archbishop Gregory Aymand of the Archdiocese of New Orleans publicly apologized to more than 600 survivors of clergy abuse during testimony in the church’s ongoing bankruptcy proceedings. Aymand expressed deep regret for harm by clergy, reaffirmed the church’s commitment to accountability, and recognized the suffering of victims.

Aymand explained that the Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in May 2020 was intended to facilitate fair financial compensation for survivors while managing the church’s resources and maintaining its mission. Survivors are arguing the bankruptcy may delay or payouts.
