The Louisiana Department of Insurance (LDI) is reminding Medicare beneficiaries that the annual Medicare Open Enrollment Period begins October 15 and runs through December 7. This is the time for beneficiaries to review their current coverage, compare options, and make changes for 2026.
During this period, participants can:
- Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan, or vice versa
- Change from one Medicare Advantage Plan to another
- Update or switch Medicare Part D prescription drug plans
Beneficiaries should review their Annual Notice of Change and Evidence of Coverage documents carefully, as they contain key updates to their plans. “Take time to look at your plan details and reach out for help if you need it,” said Vicki Dufrene, director of the Louisiana Senior Health Insurance Program (LaSHIP). “Our counselors are available to guide consumers through the process and help them find the best fit.”
For 2026, new cost protections are being introduced. Out-of-pocket prescription drug costs will be capped at $2,100 per year, and insulin will remain capped at $35 per month with no deductible. Some Medicare Advantage plans may also require referrals or prior authorizations for certain services.
Beneficiaries who are satisfied with their current coverage do not need to take action to keep it. For free, confidential counseling or to explore plan options, contact LaSHIP at 1-800-259-5300 or visit www.ldi.la.gov/LaSHIP.
