Town of Washington joins Louisiana Main Street Lagniappe program

Baton Rouge, LA – Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser and Louisiana Main Street announced that the Town of Washington in St. Landry Parish has been accepted into the Lagniappe Community Program, an 18-month process that helps towns become official Louisiana Main Street communities.

The program will support Washington’s efforts to revitalize its historic downtown, preserve its heritage, and grow its economy through small business, tourism, and community development. Plans include restoring historic buildings, improving Bayou Courtableau access, and expanding lodging and retail options.

To earn full Main Street designation, Washington must meet several benchmarks, including creating a local historic district ordinance and forming a district commission. If successful, it will become the fifth community to complete the Lagniappe Program, joining West Monroe, the Lower Ninth Ward, Winnfield, and Broussard.

Since its creation, Louisiana Main Street has generated over $1 billion in investments, 17,859 new jobs, and 3,919 new businesses statewide.
