Amtrak officials and a host of dignitaries gathered for a ribbon cutting to launch a new passenger service, the Amtrak Mardi Gras Service. The twice daily service runs along the Gulf Coast between New Orleans and Mobile, Alabama, with stops in Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi, and Pascagoula, Mississippi. The route, clocking in at just under four hours, provides a perfect getaway opportunity for Gulf Coast visitors to New Orleans.
“This is a comfortable, affordable, and scenic way for our Mississippi and Alabama neighbors to come see us for Mardi Gras, major sporting events, concerts, festivals, museums, day trips, or even longer visits,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser.
The Union Passenger Terminal in downtown New Orleans is conveniently located near hotels, restaurants, and major venues such as the Caesars Superdome, Smoothie King Center, and the Saenger Theatre.
Rail service along the Gulf Coast was discontinued after Hurricane Katrina in August 2005.
“As we approach the 20th anniversary of Katrina, this is one more sign of the progress being made which will benefit our communities. The Louisiana Office of Tourism promotes all of Louisiana. We hope domestic travelers will use this service for getaways to New Orleans, and our international visitors will travel to Louisiana and explore different parts of our state, then use this service to explore the Gulf Coast region,” said Lt. Governor Nungesser.
Sunday's ribbon cutting ceremony was followed by a ride along the Gulf Coast to and from Mobile, Alabama. Passengers can start using the rail service on Monday, August 18.
The train will operate twice daily in both directions. The cost of riding varies depending on date of travel and type of seating accommodation. The Mardi Gras Service features free Wi-Fi and a café with local food items.
