BATON ROUGE, LA – The Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) has initiated a formal review of the state’s K–12 physical education standards, aiming to enhance physical fitness as a cornerstone of lifelong health and academic success. The Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) approved this review in June, following its policy to update standards every seven years. The current standards were last revised in 2017.
Applications are now open for Louisiana residents interested in joining the standards review committees, including physical education teachers, administrators, school staff, higher education faculty, parents, and community members. The deadline for submissions is July 31.
The review will focus on refining foundational fitness skills, ensuring age-appropriate motor development, promoting high-quality instruction, and embedding health-focused outcomes that support wellness. Committees will include a steering group and two grade-band workgroups (K–5 and 6–12), with meetings beginning in Baton Rouge this October.
Revised standards are scheduled for presentation to BESE in 2026, with implementation training slated for the 2026–2027 school year and full adoption by 2027–2028. For more information, visit the LDOE website or email classroomsupporttoolbox@la.gov.
