The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is adding the Louisiana Superfund site Exide Baton Rouge to the National Priorities List (NPL). This site is a former secondary lead smelter and refinery covering 33 acres next to Baton Rouge Bayou. High concentrations of antimony, arsenic, lead, manganese, and zinc have been found in the groundwater and soil at the site.
EPA is also adding three other Superfund sites to the NPL and proposing to add three more sites. These actions aim to protect communities most in need and affected by pollution. EPA has been able to provide as much funding for cleanup work in the past two years as it did in the previous five years due to this historic funding.
