“The Atchafalaya National Heritage Area is one of our state’s most popular tourist attractions,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser. “Outside of a Louisiana State Park, there may be no better place to visit than the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area and the basin. Everyone is invited to explore America’s Foreign Country.”

Download the official passport to “America’s Foreign Country” and explore off the beaten path in the Atchafalaya Basin. Take a walk along the historic Morgan City Floodwalls or stop in for a bite at Hot Tails Restaurant in New Roads. Do some shopping at Griffin’s Antiques and Main Street Market in Bunkie or even the Pierre Part store, all the while checking off passport sites for official Atchafalaya National Heritage Area prizes.

In celebration of National Arts and Humanities Month with the Louisiana Division of the Arts, ANHA will also debut an exclusive postcard available only for the month of October. The design by Louisiana artist Hannah Gumbo, portrays a stylized sunset swamp scene. Be sure to grab one at one of the many events this month or by participating in the “America’s Foreign Country” passport program. Keep up with events throughout October on our Events Calendar.

“The Atchafalaya region boasts some of the largest cultural festivals in the state at a time when the weather is just perfect for all things outdoors. Roll your windows down for a drive, hop on the water, or take a stroll through one of our amazing natural areas. However you get there, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to savor every corner of America’s Foreign Country,” said Atchafalaya National Heritage Area Director Justin Lemoine.

October is also Archaeology Month, Louisiana Seafood Month, and Folklife Month. Be on the lookout for even more surprises throughout the month. To find out more about what is happening in the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area, check out Atchafalaya.org.
