Broadway's hit musical Come From Away, opens first September 3-6, 2026, and runs September 10-13, 2026 at Strauss Theatre Center in Monroe, LA.
Come From Away is a musical based on the true story of how the small town of Gander, Newfoundland welcomes 7,000 stranded passengers during the week of 9/11. American airspace was closed and international travelers landed in Gander.
A total of 38 planes were landed in Gander, a large increase from the original expected 18. Passengers were not originally allowed to leave the planes due to security concerns, but after over 5 hours the passengers were driven to various shelters all over the town; such as Salvation Army centers, churches, schools, and community centers in both Gander and neighboring towns.
Planes first began to be cleared for takeoff on Thursday, September 13, 2001 and continued until the last plane departed on Sunday, September 16, 2001.
Lindsey Reynolds and Hunter McBride, two stars from the cast of Come From Away, spoke briefly about the play and their characters during an interview with Cory Crowe at Lagniappe.
Hunter McBride says, "My character specifically, Oz, he is one of the two of the local police department. So he makes up half of the police department, and so he is tasked with helping acclimate over 7,000 passengers who are now landing in their small town."
Lindsey Reynolds highlights the bonds formed despite this tragic event. She says, "Even though those 'plane people' are there for a terrible, terrible reason, you see such beauty come out of it. The humanity that is shared and the relationships that are formed. As you follow this story, finding out that those relationships didn't end when they got on that plane."
