MONROE, LA — August 26, 2026 — The Ouachita Parish Mosquito Abatement District (OPMAD) has confirmed the detection of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in a local mosquito pool collected during routine disease surveillance operations.
In response to this finding, OPMAD is immediately escalating targeted vector control operations in the affected vicinity. Field crews are conducting localized ultra-low volume (ULV) adulticide truck applications, focused barrier treatments, and expanded larval inspections in surrounding habitats to rapidly reduce mosquito populations and mitigate the risk of disease transmission.
Eastern Equine Encephalitis is a rare but serious viral disease transmitted to humans and equines through the bite of an infected mosquito. It is not transmitted person-to-person or directly from horses to humans. While rare, EEE can cause severe illness affecting the central nervous system, making aggressive mosquito bite prevention essential for all parish residents. Horse owners are strongly advised to verify that their animals’ EEE vaccinations are current.
There are still mosquito pools that are positive for WNV being detected on a weekly basis across Ouachita Parish. It is very important to be mindful of mosquitoes while outdoors during while high levels of virus are being detected in the area.
OPMAD urges all residents to take proactive measures to protect themselves, their families, and their properties by following the "5 D’s" of Mosquito Prevention:
• DRAIN: Inspect yards weekly and empty all standing water from containers, tires, bird baths, pet bowls, flowerpot saucers, clogged gutters, and pool covers.
• DEET: Apply an EPA-registered insect repellent containing DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus according to label directions whenever outdoors.
• DRESS: Wear loose-fitting, light-colored, long-sleeved shirts and long pants when spending time outside.
• DAWN & DUSK: Limit outdoor activity during peak mosquito biting hours at dawn and dusk.
• DEFEND: Ensure window and door screens are in good repair and fit tightly to keep mosquitoes out of the home.
