Health officials are reminding the public about the importance of prevention of mosquito bites. The Louisiana Department of Health confirmed its first case of West Nile virus for the year in Ouachita Parish.
West Nile virus, transmitted by mosquitoes, can affect humans, birds, and other animals. Last year in Louisiana, there were 86 confirmed human cases and four fatalities. With no vaccine or specific treatment available, personal protection is crucial.
To protect yourself, use an EPA-approved mosquito repellent. Apply it to all exposed skin, and if using sunscreen, apply sunscreen first. Reapply repellent as needed, especially during extended outdoor activities.
Prevent mosquitoes from breeding by eliminating standing water around your home. Regularly empty containers like flower pots and buckets, maintain clear gutters, and repair outdoor leaks.
While most infected individuals show no symptoms, about 20% may develop flu-like symptoms. Older adults and those with underlying conditions face higher risks of severe illness.
