BATON ROUGE, La. – The Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections is pleased to share that the Louisiana

State Penitentiary hosted a special Father and Son Fishing Event on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Lake Killarney on the grounds of the facility.

In partnership with God Behind Bars, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), and the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office (WFPSO), this event was designed to strengthen family bonds and encourage meaningful connections between incarcerated fathers and their sons through a day of fellowship, recreation, and mentorship ahead of Father’s Day.

Throughout the day, participating families enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities and attractions such as fishing, games, crafts and additional family-friendly activities. Representatives from the LDWF were present to provide fishing instructions. Officers with the WFPSO helped foster positive interactions between participating youth, aimed at highlighting the supportive and approachable role officers play in the community.

Youth in attendance had the opportunity to create a personalized card and gift, which will be distributed to their father who is incarcerated on Father’s Day. During the day, individuals who participated in the program presented their sons with handwritten letters and Bibles as keepsakes of the occasion.

The event also featured a performance, as well as appearances by community organizations and special guests. God Behind Bars was on-site to document the event.

“The Father and Son Event was a powerful opportunity to restore and strengthen relationships while creating lasting memories, and investing in the next generation,” said Darrel Vannoy, warden, Louisiana State Penitentiary. “We are grateful to God Behind Bars for their partnership, their commitment to rehabilitation, strengthening families, and breaking cycles through faith and hope.”

The Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections remains committed to providing opportunities that support rehabilitation, reinforce family relationships, and encourage positive outcomes for individuals who are incarcerated and their loved ones.

The safety and security of all participants was a top priority. All individuals who are incarcerated were screened and vetted for behavioral issues prior to their participation. The facility’s secure perimeter was fully operational, with security personnel, WFPSO deputies and LDWF agents who patrolled the area.
