Winnsboro mayor arrested for benefits fraud

Alice Wallace, the 50-year-old mayor of Winnsboro, Louisiana, has been arrested as part of a Medicaid fraud investigation involving approximately $75,000 in benefits.

According to Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill's office, Wallace is alleged to have improperly received Medicaid benefits for herself and a dependent between 2021 and 2026, despite being ineligible due to her income and employment status.

Investigators revealed that Wallace, who served as the town's elected mayor during this period, failed to report significant changes in her income, marital status, employment, and access to health insurance, all of which would have disqualified her from receiving the benefits. She allegedly continued to use Medicaid benefits for six years while earning a salary that exceeded eligibility limits.

Wallace now faces six counts of government benefits fraud, with each count corresponding to a year she unlawfully received the benefits.

She turned herself in to authorities on Tuesday and was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. The investigation into the case remains ongoing.
