The Louisiana House has approved a bill to name a planned Mississippi River bridge the Donald J. Trump Expressway, passing the measure by a 68‑26 vote. The bridge would connect Louisiana Highways 1 and 30 as part of a major infrastructure project.
Bill author Representative Michael Echols says naming the bridge after the former president could increase the likelihood of receiving federal funding. The project’s estimated cost is around $3 billion.
Lawmakers amended the bill to ensure the naming would only take effect if the project receives a substantial amount of federal funding. Without that support, the designation would not apply.
The proposal has drawn both support and criticism, with debate centered on whether infrastructure should carry political names. The bill now advances to the next stage.
