ULM to host ribbon-cutting for “Through the Lens of Tianyu Wang” photo exhibit on Thursday, Feb. 12

Members of the media,

You are invited to attend a ribbon-cutting event for the photo exhibit titled “Through the Lens of Tianyu Wang: Shaanxi Province in the 1960s-2000s.” The event will be held in the lobby of Walker Hall, 700 University Ave., at 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, February 12, 2026.

In summer 2025, the Tan Family gathered to honor Tianyu Wang, esteemed Chinese photojournalist, by creating a scholarship for upperclassmen pursuing a degree in Communication. To further showcase his legacy, the family is exhibiting selections of his work in conjunction with the Chinese New Year.

The photos on display portray the local news, culture, and landscapes of Shaanxi Province, China, from the 1960s to 2000s. These decades were a pivotal time of transition in modern Chinese history which had long-term economic, political, and cultural implications.

"Through the Lens of Tianyu Wang: Shaanxi Province in the 1960s-2000s" presents a firsthand visual account of this transitional era and showcases the intersection of art and historical record via the medium of photojournalism. In Mr. Wang’s own words, photography presents a way to “remember our brilliant history in order to motivate us to make progress in the future”.

This photography exhibition was established to amplify the impact of the Tianyu Wang Endowed Scholarship. ULM students and the Monroe/West Monroe community are invited to connect with the people, history, and culture of Shaanxi Province by visiting the gallery. This exhibition was made possible due to the generous support of the ULM Foundation and the Tan family.
