New picnic pavilion enhances visitor experience at Prairie D’Ane Battlefield

Construction of a new picnic pavilion at Prairie D’Ane Battlefield, showing trucks, lumber on a trailer, and workers near a concrete slab, with leafless trees in the background.

Prescott, Arkansas-Visitors to Prairie D’Ane Battlefield will soon have a new place to rest and enjoy the historic grounds. The Nevada County Depot Museum has begun construction on a covered picnic pavilion at the site, offering a welcoming space for families, travelers, and history enthusiasts.

The pavilion is the latest in a series of improvements aimed at making the battlefield more accessible and enjoyable for the public while preserving its historical significance.

Prairie D’Ane Battlefield, located at 2243 Highway 19 North, was the site of a three-day engagement between federal and Confederate forces in April 1864 during the Camden Expedition of the Civil War. Earthworks and other features from the battle are still visible, and many recovered artifacts are on display at the Nevada County Depot Museum.

The battlefield is open daily, and the museum, housed in the historic 1912 Missouri Pacific Depot in downtown Prescott, is open Thursday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Nevada County Depot Museum is a nonprofit dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of the region. For more information about the pavilion, battlefield tours, or museum events, call 870-887-5821, email thedepotmuseum@gmail.com, or visit thedepotmuseum.org/events.
