(Monroe, LA) - The City of Monroe is inviting residents and history enthusiasts to take home a piece of Downtown Monroe through an online public auction now live at 32auctions.com/candyco. The auction features items uncovered during the environmental cleanup of the historic Ouachita Candy Company building, including vintage doors, restaurant tables, and assorted furniture.
This effort is part of a broader revitalization initiative supported by an EPA Brownfield Grant. The Candy Company has completed its environmental assessment and is currently undergoing abatement to safely remove materials from its former industrial use, clearing the way for future development. During this process, several salvageable items were discovered for the auction.
All proceeds from the auction will directly support the restoration of the Cooley House, one of Monroe’s architectural gems and last remaining example of Prairie School architecture in the American South. This restoration is funded in part by the National Park Service’s Save America’s Treasures Grant, one of the nation's most competitive historic preservation programs requiring a 50/50 funding match. The City of Monroe was the only recipient in the State of Louisiana and one of eighty recipients nationwide. Every bid placed in the auction contributes to the match and helps preserve the Cooley House.
